Kora Bales grew up in Modesto, California, and received a B.A. in English Literature and Art, with a minor in painting, from California State University, Stanislaus in 1997. She earned a secondary teacher education at Sierra Nevada College a few years later, and has taught English at the secondary level for a decade. She currently teaches English at Silver State Charter High School, and WNC, and has been working as an English tutor for WNC’s Academic Skills Center since 2009.
“Happiness,” her cover drawing, “developed from a process best described as ‘unconscious drawing.’ Without preplanning, and upon a monotone surface of graphite, forms develop from lines and tones that I believe my mind imprints onto the surface. These forms are what I manipulate, mostly through darkening line and subtracting tone, into emergent descriptions of my imagination. Once emerged, I believe these forms to be representative ‘characters’ of my unconscious mind.”
